# Rate limits

> Compliance API rate limits and throttling behavior

Base44 applies rate limits per workspace. All workspace API keys and security partners that call the same workspace share 1 request budget.

> Base44 can set a custom limit for a specific workspace.

## Rate limit errors

If you exceed the rate limit, the API returns a `429 Too Many Requests` response. Wait the number of seconds in the `retry-after` header, then retry with a newly signed authentication token. A `429` doesn't use up your token, because Base44 applies the limit first. Sign a new token for every retry anyway.
