# Checkpoints

> Save, list, and restore versions of an app with the Base44 Apps API

<Note>
  The Apps API is in beta. Its endpoints and responses may change.
</Note>

A checkpoint is a saved version of an app, captured as you build. These endpoints list an app's checkpoints, create new ones, return the app to an earlier one, and read the files a checkpoint holds. See [Apps API concepts](/developers/references/apps-api/get-started/concepts#checkpoints) for how checkpoints relate to turns and branches.

## What a checkpoint holds

A checkpoint records the app's committed code, its entity schemas, and its backend functions. [Restore checkpoint](/api-reference/restore-checkpoint) rolls the code back to the checkpoint's commit, redeploys the backend functions from that code, and restores the entity schemas the checkpoint saved.

## Deploying a checkpoint

To publish a specific checkpoint, pass its `id` as `checkpoint_id` to [Deploy an app](/api-reference/deploy-an-app). If a checkpoint's `preview_status` in [List checkpoints](/api-reference/list-checkpoints) is `failed`, use [Retry checkpoint build](/api-reference/retry-checkpoint-build) to start its preview build again.

## Endpoints

* [List checkpoints](/api-reference/list-checkpoints): List the app's checkpoints, newest first.
* [Create checkpoint](/api-reference/create-checkpoint): Save the app's current state as a new checkpoint.
* [Restore checkpoint](/api-reference/restore-checkpoint): Return the app to a saved checkpoint.
* [Retry checkpoint build](/api-reference/retry-checkpoint-build): Start a new preview build for a checkpoint.
* [Get checkpoint files](/api-reference/get-checkpoint-files): Read the source files saved in a checkpoint.
